About this Book

Artificial intelligence in medicine is nothing new. The tradition is going from the very first day of modern computers. Artificial intelligence or AI is just the opposite of human intelligence. AI is where machines use their intelligence to solve problems and analyze complex and complicated data to deliver a more regular or understandable version to the regular end. Machines or rather computers do it with the machine learning algorithms. Well, machines remember a chain of patterns. They recognize these patterns and have their own logic. In easier words, with these machine learning algorithms, machines analyze the data and match them with the previously set ones, use their logic, and then conclude the problems. However, algorithms are very precise but still, to make the error margin almost negligible or zero, one should keep rechecking the answers for a few more times. AI algorithms differ from humans in only two ways.

Modern computers and algorithms cannot adjust themselves. So, once the goal is being set, it cannot adjust the result. They will only show results accordingly to what they have been told explicitly.

Algorithms are like the black boxes on the airplane. Its results are extremely precise, but, you cannot derive the actual cause or reasons with Algorithms.

The primary changes that Artificial Intelligence has brought to the field of medicines, healthcare is mainly the primarily assumed process of prevention or treatment of some disease and the effects of those processes on the patient’s body and health. The AI program, as of now is being used in different places like the diagnosis process of the disease, patient monitoring, treatment protocol development, development of the drug, and personalized drugs. Different institutions and some research centers have already installed Artificial Intelligence in their different departments. Institutions like The Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, National Health Service are the very first and the very popular ones who have installed AI to their different departments. The most eminent techno companies like Google and IBM and some of the start-ups have also installed Artificial Intelligence algorithms to their different departments to analyze data. And they have a lot of that sort of work. However, in the medical fields, Artificial Intelligence or AI helps to lower the cost of the diagnosis and other things. That keeps the patient party is satisfied.

Moreover, with the help of Artificial Intelligence medical fields, the hospital staffs are happier, as their work pressure has been reduced big time. Different companies that help the medical managers, like, the Hospital IQ are developing their predictive analysis software to make it helpful for their clients in the medical fields. It helps with increasing the utilization of time and space, decrease the rate of patient boarding. It also helps to utilize (and sometimes decreasing) the average duration of a patient staying in the hospital and also helps in organizing staff levels.

There are researches going on in order to improve the Artificial intelligence algorithm and its usages in the medical fields. There are various researches in medical fields like cancer researches, radiology, electronic health records, tele-help and a lot more that have been merged with Artificial Intelligence. Here are some medical fields that have been benefitted big time with Artificial Intelligence in the past few years.

One of the most benefitted medical fields with AI is Radiology. Studies have shown a particular program has been developed with the Artificial Intelligence algorithm that can detect pneumonia better than the actual radiologists.

The market for Telemedicine has been increased in recent years. And with that, the possibility of Artificial Intelligence in medicine has risen. Well, that might indicate that AI in the near future will become able to communicate with the physicians if some kind of traces of the possible disease has been observed in the patient’s body. There will might be a machine to wear in the near future that will be able to monitor the patient constantly. It will receive data from the patient’s body and analyze it to tell if there is any trace of the possible disease. This device will be able to notice changes (small or big) in the human body and tell about the disease.
